Buried

“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit” (John 12:24)
I got stuck in this specific phrase while reading a book the other night. The seed which is planted needs to die in order to fulfill its ultimate purpose, bear fruit. Meaning, the seed needs to be buried for it to become what it was always meant to be.
Just like the seed needs to be buried, hidden and lost, sacrificing everything so it may actually live; so are our lives in need to be buried, hidden in Christ and lose their worldly life in order to gain eternity.
Though a lot of what I’m writing is common knowledge to the Christian community, my question is, are we really believing and submitting our lives to these words?

Let’s talk about the red letters in the Bible, the ones we should give our utmost attention to.
For example, the repetition of the words “truly, truly” invoke agreement, that’s another way of saying “amen” in Greek. This statement is used over 50 times to consider the importance of the words of Jesus - to tune our ears, to instantly take note and receive that truth in our hearts. Starting with amen implies not only that what follows is truth but that the person enunciating that statement has the authority and knowledge about it.

“Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life” (John 12:25). Only by losing our old way of life we are able to find new life.
A life oriented around ourselves, where we are our final goal, starts to show itself for what it really is: a distortion of the kind of life for which we were made.
Self-centered lives are sad and wasted. It offends our pride to hear that our very best, our greatest accomplishments, and our most sincere efforts often are moving us further away from who we were really meant to be. The reason being that while we do want goodness and love, we want it on our terms.

“… What you sow does not come to life unless it dies” (1 Corinthians 15:36).
Unless it dies… what you do with a dead body? You bury it! Think about it, you can walk past a house with a dead body and not know someone has died. It is until the funeral takes place and they are carried through the streets that everybody knows they’re dead.
The believer’s death to sin and to everything that this world can offer is at first a secret, but by an open confession they can let everyone know that they are dead with Christ.

“For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives” (Romans 6:4).
If we are dead to sin and the works of this world, it’s only because we are buried with Christ. Now the good news is: we don’t stay on a grave forever and we don’t walk among the tombs either. We may sin, but sin can never have power over us again. The grace of God got a hold of us and our hearts are forever changed.
We are now raised with Him in victory, and the same power that rose Jesus from the death lives in us. Buried to this world. Alive for eternity.
